Temple of Heaven and the Tiananmen Flag Raising: A Beijing Local's One-Day Plan (as of November 2026)
Watch the flag raising at dawn, then walk the Temple of Heaven as far as the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests — one of the easiest day plans in Beijing. This guide covers tickets, opening hours and transport based on official and semi-official sources checked on November 3, 2026. Where sources disagree, both versions are given; anything unverified is flagged. The author is a Beijing local from mainland China. Tips from his own visits are marked Author tip.

The day at a glance
- Watch the flag raising on Tiananmen Square before dawn (booking required).
- Grab breakfast, then take the metro to the Temple of Heaven West Gate.
- Enter at the West Gate and visit the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the Echo Wall and the Circular Mound Altar.
The Hall of Prayer and the other paid attractions are closed on Mondays, so this combination works best Tuesday through Sunday.
Tiananmen flag raising
How to look up the time
Flag-raising and flag-lowering times are the moments the sun rises and sets as seen from Tiananmen Square (source: Tiananmen Area Administrative Committee). They change every day, so don't pick a time from a rough estimate.
Official ways to check:
- Tiananmen Area Administrative Committee, "Flag-raising / lowering times": tamgw.beijing.gov.cn/sy/sjqsj
- Full 2026 calendar table (published 2025-12-22): tamgw.beijing.gov.cn/…
- Beijing Tourism's daily watching guides also quote the committee (e.g. on 2026-11-03: raise 06:45, lower 17:10)
Booking (required)
Tiananmen Square is free, but you must book a real-name slot to watch the flag raising. Individuals and tour groups both book 1–7 days ahead on the Tiananmen Square reservation platform and choose the "flag raising" (升旗) time slot. (Source: committee notice, 2026-09-24. An older 2023 notice said 1–9 days; current notices say 1–7.)
Booking channels include:
- WeChat mini program "天安门广场预约参观"
- "京通" mini program (WeChat / Alipay / Baidu)
- Beijing Daily and Beijing Time apps
- PC: yuyue2026.tamgw.beijing.gov.cn/…
Which documents foreign visitors can use should be checked on the booking screen itself. The committee notice pages don't publish a full ID list; third parties usually mention a passport or a foreign permanent residence card, but treat that as unverified until you see it in the booking system.
Bring the same valid ID you used to book, and enter through the security gate for your booked date and time slot. Arrive on the wrong day and you will be turned away. Dangerous items, lighters and small drones are banned. Travel light to speed up security.
Getting there early
- Metro: Line 1, Tiananmen East or Tiananmen West (source: Beijing government portal). I couldn't confirm from the metro operator whether the first train arrives before the flag raising (bjsubway.com returned 403 on 2026-11-03). Don't count on the metro for a flag-raising morning.
- Night buses (recommended by Beijing Tourism): Night 1, Night 2 and Night 17 stop near Tiananmen East / West / East of the Square. Published first/last times are around 23:20–04:50, but check the day's timetable.
Flag-lowering times are on the same official calendar. Whether you need a separate "flag lowering" slot is not spelled out in the 2026-09-24 notice — check the options shown in the booking system that day.

Tickets (peak / off-peak)
| Ticket | Peak (Apr 1–Oct 31) | Off-peak (Nov 1–Mar 31) |
|---|---|---|
| Gate ticket, full | 15 yuan | 10 yuan |
| Gate ticket, concession | 7.5 yuan | 5 yuan |
| Combo ticket, full | 34 yuan | 28 yuan |
| Combo ticket, concession | 17 yuan | 14 yuan |
| Attraction ticket (Hall of Prayer / Echo Wall / Circular Mound) | 20 yuan each (concession 10) | same (no separate official peak/off-peak split found) |
The combo ticket = gate ticket + Hall of Prayer + Echo Wall + Circular Mound. A gate ticket alone will not get you into those three attractions. Don't reuse a combo ticket and an attraction ticket at the same spot. (Sources: Beijing government portal, Beijing Tourism, Beijing Parks Administrative Center)
The Divine Music Administration is listed at 10 / 5 yuan, but it is sometimes closed for periods, so check on-site notices. The North Divine Kitchen, North Animal-Sacrifice Pavilion and the Abstinence Palace currently run without booking, with crowd control on the day.
Main concessions / free entry (summary — full rules on the ticket page / on site):
- Concession: holders of a social-security benefit card; full-time students aged 18+ up to undergraduate (graduate and adult-education students excluded), etc.
- Free: under-18s (the Temple of Heaven is a patriotic education base); visitors 60+ from other provinces / Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan / abroad (exchange a ticket with passport etc.); people with a disability certificate; serving military and fire/rescue personnel, etc.
Student concessions can be bought with a passport plus a valid student ID at a service window or via the "畅游公园" / "天坛" accounts (Parks Administrative Center reply via 12345, 2026-03-24).
Opening hours
| Peak | Off-peak | |
|---|---|---|
| Park gates | open 06:00 / last entry 21:00 / close 22:00 | open 06:30 / last entry 21:00 / close 22:00 |
| Paid attractions (Hall of Prayer etc.) | open 08:00 / last entry 17:30 / close 18:00 | open 08:00 / last entry 16:30 / close 17:00 |
The Hall of Prayer, Echo Wall, Circular Mound and similar attractions are closed on Mondays (open as usual on statutory holidays). A search snippet from the park's official homepage also mentions Mondays open from July 15 to August 31, while a related guide page only mentions statutory holidays. The summer Monday exception couldn't be confirmed in a stand-alone Parks Administrative Center notice. If you're going on a Monday, check that week's ticket page or the on-site notice.
Buying tickets — and the "reservation required?" conflict
Channels:
- WeChat official account / mini program "天坛"
- "畅游公园" (Visiting Beijing Parks) account / mini program / bjgyol.com.cn (official Parks Administrative Center platform)
- Service windows at the park gates (cash RMB, BEIJING PASS, Visa / Mastercard, etc.)
Foreign passports are accepted for purchase and entry. Online, fill in passport details under your real name (first-time ID checks may need a mainland China phone number). Offline, staff at the window can place the order for you. At the gate, show the e-ticket QR code plus the passport you booked with. Screenshot the code beforehand.
Official wording disagrees on whether a reservation is required:
- Parks Administrative Center (2025-07-22, via 12345): No reservation is required to visit municipal parks. You may buy an e-ticket 1–7 days ahead.
- Beijing government English Temple of Heaven page (2026-03 path): still describes real-name staggered reservations / ticket purchase 1–7 days ahead, and same-day QR purchase when not full.
- Third-party articles claim reservations were "fully cancelled from August 2026" — no stand-alone Parks Administrative Center or Temple of Heaven notice was found.
In practice, assume you can buy online or on site, and follow the same-day rules on "畅游公园", the "天坛" account and the windows. The Parks Administrative Center says it has not authorized third-party sellers.
Getting to the West Gate
- Address: 7 Tiantan Neidongli, Dongcheng District, Beijing (enquiries / tickets 010-67028866)
- Metro Line 8, Tianqiao Station, Exit C → West Gate (sources: Beijing government Korean portal, Beijing Tourism, tiantanpark.cn)
- Buses: 2, 20, 36, 53, 71, 72, 90, 93, 120, 622, BRT Line 1, Special 11 / 141 and others are listed as stopping at "Temple of Heaven West Gate" in semi-official guides (routes change — confirm on the day).
East Gate is Metro Line 5, Tiantandongmen Station, Exit A.
Author tip: enter at the West Gate, then use the west ticket checkpoint for the Hall of Prayer
The Hall of Prayer is a paid attraction inside the park. You need a combo ticket or an attraction ticket (or a free-entry document). A gate ticket alone is not enough.
There is no official map of which park gate leads to which Hall of Prayer checkpoint. Third-party guides often say the North or East Gate is closer to the hall — that is touring advice, not an official checkpoint rule.
Author tip: Enter at the West Gate (西门), then use the west ticket checkpoint for the Hall of Prayer. In the author's experience the queue is usually shorter there. This is not an official "this gate = this checkpoint" rule, and crowding changes by day. Treat it as a local tip and follow the signs on site.
After the flag raising, the park gates are already open. The paid attractions open at 08:00, so walking in from the West Gate and timing your arrival for opening works well.
Checklist before you go
- Look up the flag-raising time on the committee calendar or Beijing Tourism's daily guide (don't use a guess)
- Book the flag raising 1–7 days ahead on the official platform; confirm passport booking on the booking screen
- Prefer night buses in the early morning; don't rely on the first metro
- Buy a combo or attraction ticket for the Temple of Heaven — a gate ticket alone won't get you into the Hall of Prayer
- Paid attractions are closed on Mondays (except statutory holidays); the summer Monday exception is unverified
- Official sources say both "no reservation needed" and "staggered reservation" — follow the ticket page that day
- West Gate is Metro Line 8, Tianqiao Exit C; the west Hall of Prayer checkpoint tip is the author's own experience
